Cereplast Compostables® resins are renewable, ecologically sound substitutes for petroleum-based plastic products that replace nearly 100% of the petroleum-based additives used in traditional plastics with bio-based material such as corn, wheat, tapioca and potato starches that primarily come from the Midwest (versus oil from the Middle East). Certain Cereplast Compostables® resins incorporate in their formulation Ingeo™ natural plastic, made from a NatureWorks® biopolymer, which is also derived from plants.
Certified Compostable All Cereplast Compostables® resins are certified as biodegradable and compostable in the United States and Europe. Cereplast’s uniquely formulated compostable resins meet BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) standards for compostability (ASTM 6400 D99 and ASTM 6868), and European Bioplastics standards (EN 13432). The products made from Cereplast Compostables® resins break down in less than 180 days when placed in an industrial compost facility. Composting is a natural process that allows greenhouse gas emissions –carbon dioxide – to sequestrate in soil instead of being released into the atmosphere.
Environmental and Economical Made from renewable resources, Cereplast Compostables® resins cost remain stable and competitive with traditional resins. Since Cereplast Compostables® resins are starch-based, rather than petroleum-based, the cost is less subject to fluctuation of fossil fuel prices. In addition, the variety of starch options mitigates the effect of price fluctuations in any one commodity. The manufacturing process for Cereplast Compostables® resins takes place at a lower heat than required with traditional plastics, further reducing the manufacturing costs for converters.
