What Is PayByPlateMA?

Pay By Plate MA is an electronic toll payment system that allows MA drivers to pay their toll fees through video collection of their license plates. This system is only used on Massachusetts toll roads.

While registering your account, you can choose between a prepaid account or a postpaid account. 2. Remove the plastic tap from the back of the Velcro on the tag.
  3. Press the tag firmly on the target area on the windscreen.

For commercial vehicles (external tags)

Using a screw, you will need to mount the tag on the bumper where the number plate is located. Make sure that the tag and the number plate are almost in the same line.

What E-ZPass MA Account?

The E – Zpass MA account allows you to manage toll payments as you will be able to see past toll charges and update your payment information. When you open an E – Zpass account for the first time, you’ll be required to make the initial payment to establish a float on your account.

Now, as you travel through various tolls, deductions will be made from your account balance until your balance is too low. At this point, you will be required to top up your account.

The way this system works is that when you open an account, you are given a transponder that stores all your account information and is usually mounted on your windscreen.

This transponder is activated by an antenna on a toll lane and reads your account information, and deducts the required amount allowing you to pass through without causing congestion.

Discount For E-ZPass Users

Depending on the state or lane where the toll was issued, E-ZPass offers various discounts to its customers. For instance, when on Turnpike in Pennsylvania, paying tolls using E-ZPass can save you up to $6.70 compared to the toll by mail payment.

For instance, a vehicle using E-ZPass NY on the Verrazano –Narrow Bridge may save up to $3.38 as compared to when paying for it using E-ZPass. While the discount amount may vary, paying using E-ZPass is cheaper than using mail or cash.

Can I use my E –Zpass in someone else’s car?

Yes, all you have to do is ensure the vehicle is registered with your E – Zpass account. The good news is that you can do the registration online.

What happens if I do not pay the toll in Massachusetts?

The owner of the registered vehicle will receive an invoice via the mail in 7-10 business days. Failure to pay before the due date will result in a penalty of late fees. Further postponement of paying the tolls plus late fees can result in the suspension of the vehicle license.

Why do I get a Toll bill, yet I have an E-ZPass account?

There are two reasons why you could be receiving tolls by mail toll bill instead of toll transaction posting to your account.

  1. The vehicle’s license plate number that was billed was not listed on the E-ZPass account.
  2. The E-ZPass tag was not detected at the toll. This can be caused by poor positioning of the E-ZPass tag or if it was not in the vehicle.
